Nhận xét: used to + verb= xưa thường. That’s where I used to live when I was a child, đó là nơi tôi đã ở khi còn nhỏ. Life isn’t so easy as it used to be.= đời sống nay không giản dị như xưa. There used to be a grocery store over there.=Ở đằng kia xưa có một tiệm thực phẩm. You used to smoke a pipe, didn’t you? Có phải ngày trước anh hút píp phải không? Trong những thí dụ trên ‘used to’ phát âm là /ju:st/.
Còn used to + verb ing, có nghĩa là “quen,” đi trước bởi động từ “be” hay “get”. So sánh hai câu: He’s quite used to hard work, anh ta quen làm việc nặng nhọc. He’s used to working hard. =anh ta quen làm việc chăm chỉ. I’m used to getting up early.=tôi quen dậy sớm. I’m not used to spicy foods.=tôi không quen ăn cay. You’ll soon get used to it. = Rồi anh sẽ quen với chuyện đó. Used to trong những thí dụ này cũng đọc là /ju:st/. Now employees have to get used to changing jobs and companies.=bây giờ nhân viên một sở phải quen với vấn đề đổi việc hay đổi sở. Vậy sau “be used to’ hay “get used to” nghĩa là “quen,” động từ theo sau ờ dạng verb+ing.

Phân biệt với “used” là quá khứ (past tense) hay quá khứ phân từ (past participle) của động từ ‘to use’—nghĩa là “dùng.” Used phát âm là /ju:zd/. I used his cell phone because mine was dead.=tôi dùng điện thoại cầm tay của ông ta vì máy của tôi hết pin. Used cars=xe cũ. This used car is still useable=xe này cũ nhưng còn dùng được. User=người sử dụng. There are more cell phone users in the United States than in any country=có nhiều người dùng điện thoại cầm tay ở Mỹ hơn các xứ khác. User friendly=dễ sử dụng. Big computer companies try to make their equipment as user friendly as possible.=các công ty lớn chế tạo máy điện tử cố làm cho dụng cụ máy móc của họ càng dễ sử dụng càng tốt. Tóm lại, used to, nghĩa là xưa thường; be/get used to + adj. or verb+ing, nghĩa là “quen,” phát âm là /ju:st/; còn quá khứ hay quá khứ phân từ “used” của to use thì phát âm là /ju:zd/. Nói vắn tắt, used đọc là /ju:zd/ nhưng nếu used có to theo sau thì used to đọc như /ju:st/.
